Dear Public Service Commission:
I am a resident of Utah County and protest the approval of the operation of a power plant on the old Geneva Steel site by either Calpine or Utah Power and Light Company, or Pacfic Corporation, or anyone to the following reasons:
1-Utah County is already a highly CO2 impacted area and have had numerous past violations which trigger oxygenated fuels, suspend road constructions, health problems, etc..
2-Utah County and in particular the Wasatch Front area from Lehi to Provo is the nation’s highest birthing area. This area needs to be protected from further toxic compounds like CO2. It is not in the interest of the public nor welfare of children to authorize a power plant in the play pen of the nation’s most baby productive area.
3-The IPP Power Plant is only built out to stage one and can have two more stages added to it. The small amount of power that this plant will produce could easily be produced in Delta away from this child sensitive area.
4-Since the closure of Geneva Steel lung ailments have dramatically been reduced in Utah County. Replacing toxic for toxic is not good public policy. That steel plant was built during World War II and as such the pollution was justified for national defense. There is no such rational basis today whatsoever. The only basis for this power plant which will produce tons of C02 is money. Money in the kilts of Scottish Power moguls. It is appalling that the Public Service Commission would ever consider such a request and most likely approve it. Utah is a very Toxic state it has North America’s No. 1 polluter (Mag Corp.), etc. There is much ballyhooed about education, but what good is an education if the environment makes the babies, the children, the teenagers, young mother, young father, the working man, the elderly ill. There is no economic offset provided by the applicants to the public. There is no need for a power plant at this location period.
5-Hearing requested. Notice of appeal given. Whatever the process is let’s get this in front of a Utah County judge perhaps with a respiratory ailment de novo review?. Then something fair and reasonable will be done. Please do not give approval for the power plant to operate in Utah County. Isn’t the Mona Plant enough? IPP Power Plant enough? CO2 levels are on the rise already due to congestion, please do not add tons and tons of CO2 to our already toxic air. The levels of CO2 on State Street already exceed federal levels. Why don’t you drive with your window down along state and see how many minutes it takes before the air makes you sick.
Sincerely,
E. Johnson
